SoBran, Inc. is seeking a Floor Leader to serve at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland (Building 50).

OVERVIEW:  Responsibilities of this position are that of a Floor Leader for the NIH, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). These responsibilities include all activities required for the proper care and maintenance of on-site animals.

Description of Duties:

  • Serve as the supervisor on site in the absence of the Facility Manager and the Assistant Facility Manager
  • Act as team leader for animal care and cagewash personnel
  • As directed by the Facility Manager or Assistant, supervise and direct daily activities of animal caretakers and cagewash personnel to ensure that all required functions are carried out appropriately, including receiving animals, feeding and watering, sanitation and cleaning, handling and restraint, health surveillance, equipment maintenance, supply inventories, animal manipulations, laboratory procedures, and other contract-related duties
  • Schedule cage changing and assign daily activities to personnel performing husbandry procedures
  • Ensure that Standard Operating Procedures (SOPS) and the contractor’s policies and procedures are adhered to by the staff to include assisting with training husbandry personnel according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Monitor environmental and biological conditions in the facility and report any discrepancies
  • Ability to assist with the duties of Technicians, Animal Caretakers, and Cagewash personnel
  • Participate in interviews and selection of husbandry personnel
  • Familiar with Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for chemicals used in the work area
  • Assist in any contract related activity, as assigned by your supervisor, to complete the required work to include assisting with cage wash duties
  • Perform regular QA of all facility aspects and participate in the program wide QA team
  • Ability to work flexible hours (i.e. alternate shift schedules) as needed to meet operational needs of the work site
  • Participate in weekend and holiday manager on-call rotation schedule, which may include on-site work or supervision
  • Willingness to work in dedicated biocontainment areas handling various biological or chemical agents. Ability to maintain balance, full range of body motions, and physical agility while wearing required protective equipment, including a Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR)
  • Always think safety first when performing daily duties
  • Wear uniforms and appropriate clothing and equipment as identified by the work area and PPE as defined by standard operating procedure (SOP), animal study proposal (ASP), and the Safety Department
  • Report any abnormal conditions of the animal rooms, animal facility or immediate vicinity to supervisory staff
  • Perform other duties, as assigned

Required Education:  Must have a high school diploma or equivalent; must be certified by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science as an Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or be currently eligible for the certification and become certified within 6 months of obtaining the position

Required Experience: 3 years of experience in a laboratory animal facility, leadership experience preferred. Must have experience in such specialty areas as rodent facilities management, timed matings, rodent technical procedures, barrier management, and data management. Must have a working knowledge of all levels of biohazard containment. Must complete the required training and receive clearance on the duties of Floor Leader as outlined.  

Qualified applicants must also meet these requirements:

  • Ability to comfortably lift 50 lbs.
  • Stand or walk continuously up to 6 hours per day
  • Kneel, bend, squat, push, pull and reach or lift overhead
  • Use hands for simple grasping, pushing or pulling, and repetitive or fine manipulations frequently
  • Work in a controlled laboratory environment under a variety of temperature and humidity conditions
  • Position requires a strong command of the English language
